BICYCLE Safety
Be careful when RIDING BICYCLES
When riding bikes, the following safety measures are recommended- taken from 'The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' (RoSPA). For more information on safety visit www.rospa.org.uk
Cycle Smart with Recess - show the kids how to be smart and safe on their bikes.
Hedgehogs - excellent UK Government site which shows young kids all about Road Safety
in a fun and imaginative way. Games to play and excellent road safety advice
Check which cycle training courses are available at your child's school and encourage them to take one if possible.
- Make sure your child always wears a cycle helmet (and wear one yourself to set an example), as it will help to protect them if they have an accident.
- Children under the age of 10 should not be allowed to cycle on the road.
- Make sure that your child's bike is the right size and that the front and back lights work, the back reflector is clean and the brakes and tyres are working. It is an offence to cycle at night without a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back.
- In some areas, special cycle routes, paths and lanes are provided - if this is the case in your area, make sure your child is aware where they are.
- Make sure your child has a cycle lock and that the frame is marked with your postcode.
Roads and Footpaths
- Footways (pavements) are for pedestrians and it is illegal to cycle on these unless there are sign's stating otherwise.
- Cycling is permitted on footpaths (as opposed to pavements) provded that the Highway Authority has designated all or part of the footpath as a cycle track.
- Cycling is permitted on bridleways under the Countryside Act 1968, the right of way though on bridleways and footpaths should be given to the pedestrian or horse rider.
Helmets
It is recommended that all cyclists wear a helmet that meets a recognised safety standard.
- Ensure that the helmet is the right size and worn correctly
- wearing a helmet is a simple, cost effective way that individual cyclists can protect themselves.
